Guide to 'Download All' Functionality
The Browser-Based Download All feature lets you download every file in a content item's file list directly to a folder on your computer. Here are some of the main features:
- Select a destination folder on your device.
- Create a new subfolder in the selected destination folder and name it using the content ID and revision number.
- Automatically save all the files in the content item into the new subfolder.
- Download progress is shown directly on the DBL page.
- Pause and resume the download, retry failed files, or cancel the download at any time.
- Resume the download where you left off if the browser is closed or refreshed.
- Review and verify downloads using a plain-text log that is saved in the destination folder.
Supported actions
| Action | Available when |
|---|---|
| Start download | No other download is in progress |
| Pause | Download is in progress |
| Resume | Download is paused |
| Retry failed files | Download completed with one or more errors |
| Cancel | Any active state |

Browser Compatibility
Supported browsers (versions since Oct 2020)
- Google Chrome (version 86+)
- Microsoft Edge (version 86+)
- Opera (version 72+)
Unsupported browsers
- Firefox, Safari, Brave, and all mobile browsers are not supported. If you are on an unsupported browser, you will see a message explaining this when you click "Download All".
- Individual files can still be downloaded one at a time from the file list on any browser.
Note: If you are using an unsupported browser, you’ll receive the message shown below. Clicking “Okay” dismisses the modal; no download is started.

Starting a Download
If you are a part of the content contributor’s organization, the "Download All" button appears as an inline banner above the file list on a content entry's Files tab. In this case, you will also have access to all project files by pressing “Access files.”

If you are not part of the content contributor’s organization, but the content has an open access agreement, you can access the files through that agreement by pressing the “View” button that is shown on the license agreement.

Choosing a Destination Folder
After clicking "Download All", the browser shows its native folder picker. Its appearance varies by OS (Windows Explorer on Windows, Finder on macOS).

- Important: the application will not allow you to select sensitive operating system folders. If you attempt this, you will see the following message:
- In this case, you need to create a new folder within your selected folder OR select a folder elsewhere on your computer (such as your Documents folder)
- The app creates a subfolder inside the folder you select
- Grant read/write permission when prompted.
- Cancelling the dialog without selecting a folder stops the flow.
File Conflicts: Overwrite or Skip
Before downloading, the app checks whether any files already exist in the destination subfolder. If so, you will be shown the message below.

User Choices and Outcomes
| Choice | What happens |
|---|---|
| Overwrite Files | All files are re-downloaded. Existing files on disk are replaced. |
| Skip Files | Existing files are skipped and counted as complete. Only new or missing files are downloaded. |
| Close / Cancel icon | Message box closes. No download is started. |
Download Progress
Once a download is in progress, an inline progress bar replaces the Download All banner.
Below is an example of an In Progress Download:

A Successful Download will look like this:

A Failed Download looks like this:

Pausing and Resuming
Pausing
Click the pause icon on the progress bar at any time.

Pausing stops all downloads in progress. No data is lost. The progress bar shows "Paused" with a count of completed vs. paused files.
Resuming
Click the play icon to resume. The download continues from where it left off, no data is re-downloaded.

Resuming After a Browser Refresh or Crash
If the browser tab is closed, refreshed, or crashes mid-download, the app detects the interruption the next time you open the content page.
The progress bar appears automatically, showing the download as paused. Click ‘Resume’ to restart the download. This will trigger the Relink Folder message shown below. Because the browser cannot retain a folder selection across page loads, you must re-select the folder.

Once the folder is re-selected, the download resumes from where each file was interrupted.
Important Note: You must re-select the same folder you originally chose. Selecting a different folder will start a fresh download in that folder. If the original folder is no longer accessible (e.g., an external drive was disconnected), you must cancel and start a new download.
Retrying Failed Files
If one or more files fail, the progress bar shows a "Failed" state with a "Retry Failed" button.

Clicking ‘Retry failed downloads re-downloads only the files with an error; successfully completed files are not touched. If you have closed the browser, you may be prompted to re-select your folder first.
Cancelling a Download
Click "Cancel All" (a progress bar text button as shown below) or the × icon.

- All downloads stop immediately.
- The progress bar disappears and the Download All button reappears.
- Files already written to disk are not deleted. Any partially downloaded files are left in the destination subfolder.
Note: If you download to the same folder again after cancelling, you may see a message regarding overwriting any partially downloaded files. You can safely choose ‘Overwrite.’
Revision Mismatch
If the revision being downloaded no longer matches the revision on the current page, you’ll see the message below. This can happen if you paused a download for an extended period, and the content was updated to a new revision during that time.

- Restart download cancels the current download and starts a new download session for the current revision. Note: if you select the same folder you were previously downloading to, you will also see the File Conflicts warning modal.
- Clicking Cancel clears the download entirely.
Another Download Already in Progress
Only one download session can run at a time. If you click "Download All" while a different download is already active, this message appears:

Clicking Okay will dismiss the message and continue the existing download.
You can press ‘View downloads’ in the top menu bar to return to the in-progress download page:

Where Files Are Saved
Files are not saved directly into the folder you select; the app creates a subfolder inside the chosen folder:
<Content UID> - Revision <Revision Number>
Example:
My Downloads/
001887f574af4018 - Revision 3/ ← created by the app
release/
mat.usx
mrk.usx
The folder structure from the content entry is preserved inside the subfolder.

The Audit Log File
During every download session, the app writes a plain-text log file alongside the content subfolder (not inside it).
File name:
<Content UID> - Revision <Revision Number> - DOWNLOAD AUDIT LOG.txt
The log lists every file with its final status (downloaded, failed, or skipped) and ends with a summary (e.g., COMPLETE & VERIFIED, COMPLETE WITH EXCEPTIONS, or PAUSED).

Troubleshooting Quick Reference
| Scenario | What you see | Recommended action |
|---|---|---|
| Browser is Firefox, Safari, or mobile | "Unsupported Browser" modal | Switch to Chrome or Edge on desktop |
| Folder picker cancelled | Nothing (silent) | Click Download All again |
| Files already exist in destination | "File Conflicts" modal | Choose Overwrite or Skip |
| Browser refreshed mid-download | Paused banner on next visit | Resume → Relink folder |
| One or more files fail | "Failed" state with Retry button | Click Retry Failed |
| Retry fails repeatedly | "Failed" state again | Try individual file downloads; escalate if persistent |
| .partial files visible in folder | Download was interrupted | Resume to complete; or delete and re-download |
| "All files already existed and were skipped" | Success state | Files are already present, no action needed |
| User logs out mid-download | Download cancelled, progress cleared | Log back in and start the download again |
| Licensed text content | Standard browser ZIP download (no progress bar) | ZIP behavior is normal, no folder picker or resume |
Note: Licensed text content uses ZIP downloads. For licensed text content (e.g., Scripture texts), Download All triggers a ZIP file download through the browser's standard download mechanism rather than the file-by-file flow described in this document. The folder picker, progress bar, pause/resume, and audit log do not apply to ZIP downloads.
