Creative Commons
When DBL content is made available as Open access, Creative Commons is one of the frequently used license templates that a Contributor organization can use. Like all Open access content, DBL members may immediately access and download content files without needing permission.
Please carefully read the license agreement so you understand what is and what is not allowed in your content usage.
What is Creative Commons
Creative Commons are free, easy-to-use copyright licenses that provide a standardized way to give permission to share and use content with conditions set by the Contributor organization. Creative Commons licenses are both perpetual (no expiration) and irrevocable.
Here are 3 examples:
- CC BY-NC - Use the Creative Commons - Attribution-NonCommercial license to release your content for DBL members to distribute, remix, adapt, and build upon the content in any medium or format for noncommercial purposes only with attribution given to the creator.
- CC BY-ND - The Creative Commons - Attribution-NoDerivs license allows you to release content for DBL members to distribute in any medium or format in unadapted form only with attribution given to the creator. This license allows for commercial use.
- CC0 - This allows you to release your content with copyright rights and waive all your interests that may exist in your work worldwide.

Using a Creative Commons Template
A License Manager or Item Licenser of a Contributor organization can submit their content to be Open access. DBL strongly suggests choosing one of the Creative Commons templates already in the DBL template library.
From the dashboard, click "+ New" and select "Create agreement".
In the next window, select the content for which to create an agreement and click Next.
Use the search bar to type the content title or keywords. Results will appear automatically.
For License type, select Open access. Then, click on the Next button.
Now to choose a template, scroll down to the selection menu titled Community templates, and select a Creative Commons license to use for your content:
You may customize any details under Addendum and Show default options. Then click the Send for approval button.
This agreement draft will be sent to the Contributor organization’s License Manager to review and approve. After approval, the content will be made available for all DBL members as Open access.
